River St & West St Rebuilding

River and West Streets rebuilding

Please be advised the initial construction work on River and West Streets will begin this week, January 7th, 2019.

This is a major construction job involving replacement of the water mains, relining the sanitary sewer and rebuilding parts of the storm sewer and finally resurfacing of both roads. The existing water and sewer lines are over 100 years old and well past their service life.

Initially there will be minor construction activities being performed in preparation for the  major underground work.

The major work on the project is expected to begin approximately January 15, 2019 and is anticipated to be complete by late March or early April. All on street parking will be eliminated during the day time working hours. Those on street parking areas not directly under construction will open in the evenings for parking.  The excavated areas will temporarily be capped and the roadways returned to normal service at this time. Once the asphalt plants reopen in April the roadways will be resurfaced with new asphalt. The total completion of the project will be at the end of May (prior to Blossom Time) and before the bridge construction starts near the end of June.

During the underground construction period River and West Streets will be limited to one way traffic for access to property and businesses.

While there will be some unavoidable delays and interruptions to normal deliveries and utility services, these will be kept to a minimum and advanced notice of interruptions given. All businesses will be accessible throughout the construction period. In the evenings, after the construction day, barrels will be moved to allow as many spaces as possible to be opened for parking.

We fully realize some level of inconvenience will occur during the project duration. We ask for everyone’s understanding as we undertake this necessary repair and upgrade. The water and sewer lines in this area are among the oldest in the village, installed in 1907, and are undersized for optimal firefighting needs. The continued upgrade of Village’s water lines results in an improvement in the Villages overall ISO rating and a savings in our individual fire insurance costs.

The Village, our engineer and contractors will work on an ongoing basis to minimize the disruptions from this project.
