Identity theft

While identity theft is a widespread national challenge, many Ohioans are finding their identities are being fraudulently used to file phony unemployment claims.

Discovery

This is generally being discovered in two ways:

  1. The victim is notified by their employer that a verification letter has been received from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to verify that person is indeed no longer employed.
  2. The victim may receive a 1099-G tax form in the mail, showing they were paid unemployment compensation during the previous tax year (2020).

What to do

Because this problem is sharply becoming more common, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has made available detailed instructions on what a victim should do when it is suspected or determined that their identity has been fraudulently used for this purpose.

Specifically, this identity theft should be reported immediately to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services by accessing the website www.unemployment.ohio.gov, which will re-direct to https://unemploymenthelp.ohio.gov.  From there, click on “Report Identity Theft”, which will then provide various options for learning what to do, and for reporting the situation.

In addition to the above websites, victims may call the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services at 833-658-0394 between 8 am and 5 pm., Monday through Friday, for assistance.
