The Village of Chagrin Falls Stabilizes Eroding Bank of the Chagrin River
Chagrin Falls Village, OH; September 30, 2019: With $88,800 in funding from an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency 319 grant, and $59,200 provided as match by Village of Chagrin Falls 250 feet of severely eroding streambank were stabilized along the Chagrin River in fall 2017. Four bendway weirs, rock structures that extend into the stream to direct flows away from banks; and toe stone protection were installed to reduce extreme streambank erosion. This project also involved regrading the streambanks to a gentler, more stable slope, and excavating the adjacent riparian area to increase floodplain water storage. Native vegetation was planted along the streambank and in the floodplain in spring 2019.
Sediment is a major cause of impairment in the Chagrin River. Excessive sediment degrades habitat for fish and aquatic insects, decreases water clarity, and acts as a mode of transport for phosphorous and other pollutants to Lake Erie. Stabilizing this section of eroding streambank is expected to reduce the amount of sediment entering the Chagrin River by 65 tons each year. This project restores floodplain access, reduces sediment pollution, and improves water quality both at the project area and further downstream.
The Village contracted with Davey Resource Group and Mark’s Construction, a design-build team of environmental scientists, engineers, and contractors, to complete this restoration work. Chagrin River Watershed Partners, Inc. (CRWP), a nonprofit organization that provides technical assistance to the communities and park districts that drain to the Chagrin River, is also assisting Chagrin Falls Village with this project.
Interested citizens are invited to a tour of the project site on October 17, 2019 at 3 pm. CRWP, Davey Resource Group, and Village staff will lead the tour and share more information on the project at this time. The tour will be held at Meadow Lane Waste-Water Treatment Plant at 301 Meadow Lane, Chagrin Falls, 44022. Please register at:
This project was financed in part through a grant from the State of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, under the provisions of Section 319(h) of the Clean Water Act.
