North Main Bridge Project Status

At this time, it has been announced by the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works that no physical work will begin on the North Main Street bridge replacement project in 2019.  The County is working with the Village to address logistical issues and revise project specifications prior to re-bidding the project later this year.  The earliest time that any work would actually begin would be at the start of 2020.

The Village is continuing to assess the retaining “wing wall” project adjacent to the bridge to determine if we will either move forward with the project this year or postpone it to coincide with the bridge project.  We will notify the community as soon as we have made a decision.

Thank you for your interest and patience regarding these projects.

NORTH MAIN STREET BRIDGE PROJECT UPDATE

NORTH MAIN BRIDGE PROJECT STATUS 3-14-2019
The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works opened bids for the North Main Street Bridge Project on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. There was only one bidder and that bid was significantly over the county’s cost estimate and therefore cannot be accepted by the county.
We have been advised by the County that they are now analyzing the project specifications and that they intend to re-bid the project as soon as they complete their analysis.
They will be notifying the Village administration as soon as they have a firm plan moving forward.  This means that at this time, this project is postponed until further notice.  We will notify the community as soon as we have further information to report.
In regards to the Village project to rebuild the retaining  “wing walls” adjacent to the bridge along both Riverside and Bell Street parks, the Village had planned to perform this project alongside the County project of rebuilding the bridge.  We are now assessing the situation to determine if we will either move forward with the “wing wall” project as a standalone project or postpone it to coincide with the bridge project.  Again, we will notify the community as soon as we have further information to report.
Thank you for your interest and patience as we work through the process to get these projects underway.

Main Street Bridge

As you know the county is going to be replacing the Main Street Bridge over the two year period 2019 and 2020. Construction is slated to start this June; shortly after Art in the Park. To prevent a second disruption we will be under taking a rebuilding of the wing walls at the same time; the vertical walls between the bridge and the man made falls. While there will be some degree of unavoidable disruption associated with this, it is required. The bridge last had a major rebuild in the early 1930’s and the wing walls in the early 1980’s. Time has taken its toll.

The county plans on bid opening for this project on Wednesday, March 13th, with contractor selection following shortly thereafter.

The Village is planning on calling a meeting of merchants and residents in early May to explain the construction plans and our planning to make the process as least disruptive as possible.

Construction is expected to begin with the East Side of the bridge first and once completed, move to the West side. During construction, two way traffic will be maintained across the bridge. Prior to contractor selection and our having an opportunity to meet with the contractor for preconstruction planning; we do not have additional details regarding possible disruption at this time, nor plans for minimize it.

We have been actively planning to get ready for this construction project.  We have secured all day employee leased parking spaces that will more than compensate for the spaces lost due to construction and we are discussing with various professional groups regarding an institutional advertising campaign program to promote all business in Chagrin during the construction period.

When we meet in early May we will be in a position to answer your questions, share our thinking on managing this process and solicit your ideas and input to minimize the effect on business.
