Mill Street Slope Failure Update

11666115_1034301593254963_5601130850354884608_nOn Saturday, June 27th a slope failure occurred along Mill Street on Village property.  As a precaution the Police Department closed the road and pedestrian bridge until it could be inspected by the Village Engineer and geotechnical consultant.  The immediate cause of the failure is thought to be the eight inches of rain that the area has endured in the past month.  This slope has a history of failures with a very similar slope failure occurring in March 1973 that resulted the loss of part of the road.  A structural repair was made that supported that section on bedrock.  Another earlier slip was repaired with the construction of a concrete retaining wall.  The current slip is located just west of the retaining wall.

Since the slope was known to be unable to support the pedestrian bridge, it was built with a minimum amount of disturbance to the slope by drilling vertical concrete pilings through the slope into bedrock.  The Village Engineer has cleared the walkway for reopening since it is supported by bedrock and not at jeopardy due to the slope failure.

The road section above the slip, while not currently showing signs of failure, is not supported by bedrock and will remain closed until a proper structural repair can be made.  The Village Engineer will work with the geotechnical engineers to prepare a recommendation for support of the roadway.  It is unknown at this time what the cost will be.  The Village has an emergency fund that can be tapped and will seek emergency funds through the Ohio Public Works Commission
